The LMU Human Library

On Wednesday, October 21, 2015 (12:00-3:00pm) at LMU's Laband Art Gallery and the adjacent Dunning Court, LMU will host another Human Library due to overwhelming positive feedback at previous Human Library events. The Human Library is part of an international movement designed to promote dialogue, reduce prejudices, and encourage understanding simply through the art of one-on-one conversation.

How does a Human Library work?

Just like a regular library! A Reader borrows a Book for a limited period of time. Usually, the Reader is interested in the stories they might find within a particular Book. After borrowing the Book, the Reader returns it to the Library, and if they like, they may check out another Book. But there is one significant difference. The Books in the Human Library are human beings, and each Book and Reader has the opportunity to engage in unique, individual dialogue about the human experience.

What else do I need to know?

  • There are no advanced reservations! The Human Library will open at 11:30am, 30 minutes before the first check-out session. At that point, Readers may put holds on Books for any session during the Human Library event (12-3pm). Maximum of one hold per Reader/Group.
  • All other checkouts will be first-come, first serve. Walk-in checkouts may be available, so just stopping in is encouraged!
  • Check outs are for 30 minutes; up to 3 Readers can check out one Book at a time
  • 1 renewal will be permitted per Reader/Book if there are no holds and the Book agrees
  • The Librarian will provide each Reader with a short list of conversation starters for their Book. (This is not always needed, but it's nice to have!)
  • The reader must return the Book in the same mental and physical condition as borrowed. It is forbidden to cause damage to the Book, or hurt his or her dignity in any way. The Reader is responsible for preserving the condition of the Book.
  • The Reader accepts the fact that the Book can quit the conversation if he or she feels that the Reader treats him or her in an inappropriate manner or hurts his or her dignity.
  • The last checkout will take place 30 minutes before the event ends.
